Iron Man 2020 Begins In…2020

by James Ferguson

It’s clear now that I missed quite a lot by not attending Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con. We heard about what’s next for Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, and now Iron Man. Marvel has announced a new event beginning for old shellhead in January 2020, fittingly called Iron Man 2020, written by Dan Slott and Christos Gage and illustrated by Pete Woods.

Back in 1984, the Iron Man of 2020 visited from the future in Machine Man #2. Now, decades later, that future is the present. There have been some recent teasers hinting at a tragic fate for Tony Stark and his long-lost brother, Arno Stark has taken over as Iron Man. How Arno will tackle the responsibilities of a hero will have profound effects on the Marvel Universe.

Executive Editor Tom Brevoort says:

Like the inexorable turning of pages on a calendar, we’ve been building up to the arrival of 2020 and the advent of Arno Stark as Iron Man ever since this latest run began. Here, all of the larger themes we’ve been playing with will come to the fore in a big, sweeping, epic action movie that anyone can enjoy!

Iron Man 2020 is a six-issue mini-series that will also raise some thought-provoking questions about what it means to be an artificial intelligence. Expect to see robotic characters like Vision, Jocasta, Albert, and Elsie-Dee begin a true Robot Revolution. There are tie-ins planned for the event featuring other armored characters.

Iron Man 2020 kicks off in January 2020.
