Up, Up, And Go Away? A Look At Superman: Year One #3

It was definitely a game of two very different Supermen last week as DC Comics not only releases Superman Smashes the Klan #1 by Gene Luen Yang  – a comic far more in keeping with the true essence of what Superman is all about, in my humble opinion – but also released the final chapter in the much-hyped Frank Miller and John Romita Jr’s Reagan-era Superman: Year One #3, set in his Dark Knight Returns universe. A series that’s seen a young Clark join the armed forces, as well as use his powers for personal gain while still in school. Oh, how alternative. Not.

With this issue promising Clark Kent’s initial meeting with Lois Lane and only the start of his fledgling career at The Daily Planet, might there be a sequel to this comic sometime down the road? After all, it’s not been the most dynamic of series, and I’m still reeling at this very off-the-mark version of a character I’m beginning to think Miller secretly dislikes, if this version is anything to go by.

Can he redeem himself in this last issue? Doubtful, but I’ll give it a go. Call me a sucker for punishment.
