Netflix Orders Ramayana-Inspired Anime From The Creative Team Behind Castlevania

by Tito W. James

From Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Seis Manos, Gods & Heroes) and writer Warren Ellis, comes a new anime titled Heaven’s Forest. The anime is a re-telling of the Ramayana set in an Indo-futuristic world. The Ramayana is one of the world’s greatest epics that depicts the hero Rama saving his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon Ravana with the aid of the Monkey God Hanuman.

Producer Adi Shankar had this to say about the project.

“My whole life I’ve dreamed of seeing Hindu mythology represented in international media,” said Shankar. “My culture’s stories are spectacle-filled fantasy epics in a lavish aesthetic and we’re going to bring it to the global stage.”

The only other Indo-futuristic world I’ve ever encountered was that of the unforgettable Asura’s Wrath. With Castlevania and Seis Manos, Powerhouse Animation has proven capable of taking the best elements from anime and combining them with fresh, mature storylines. Through a lengthy career, Ellis has established his ability to write works that are both thrilling and heartbreaking. Shankar is a strong advocate for mature animation and original ideas. Therefore I have high hopes for Heaven’s Forest.
