While we may not known Jayme Lawson’s role in The Batman just yet, we may have a pretty good guess.
Collider reports the Julliard-trained newcomer has joined the cast of Matt Reeve’s upcoming Batman picture. Starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, it will also feature Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Paul Dano as the Riddler. Reportedly, Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis are in talks to play Penguin and Alfred, respectively. And if it seems the film is stuffed with rogues, the plot is said to focus on the World’s Greatest Detective actually facing a mystery for the first time in his cinematic life. Such a story would need a lot of suspects.
It may also need allies, which is why we’re guessing Lawson may be end up playing Barbara Gordon. That’s not to say she’ll debut as Batgirl or that she’ll be the Barbara of the Batgirl film also in development, but she is young and a completely new face — something ideal for the character in terms of The Batman and advantageous should Warner Bros. want her to continue playing the part in other areas of its scattered DC Film Multiverse. As of now, it is unclear if the film will tie to the continuity established by Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or go it alone like Joker, but it is always possible the studio will hedge its bets and sign her to a long-term deal.
Of course, it is also possible Lawson will just play a minor role and end up a break-out star in a subsequent film down the line; sort of like the way Game of Thrones‘s Jack Gleeson appeared in Batman Begins as a young actor. And should Lawson not turn about to be Barbara Gordon, we expect someone will fill her boots in the film. It would just be too weird not to feature her at this point.
The Batman is set for release on June 25th, 2021.
