Doctor Who Returns New Year’s Day
by Erik Amaya
The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) has scheduled her appointment with the universe: New Year’s Day 2020.
As revealed by BBC America Monday morning, Doctor Who will return for a 12th season on January 1st with a New Year’s Day special and take up its regular US timeslot on January 5th; meaning, for the first time in the history of the revived program, the new season will immediately follow the holiday special. Previously, the holiday episode marked a special appearance by the Doctor following or preceding a long break between seasons. The New Year’s special will mark the end of one of the longest breaks since the series returned in 2005.
Following the special, Season 12 will start with a two-part story called “Spyfall,” which will introduce new creatures and, seemingly, a new season-long arc for the characters. The season will also see the return of the Doctor’s TARDIS Team of Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill as Graham O’Brien, Ryan Sinclair, and Yasmin Khan and villains like the Racnoss and the Cybermen. It will also feature guest appearances by actors like Stephen Fry, Lenny Henry, Robert Glenister and Goran Višnjić. Reportedly, the season will see Team TARDIS encountering Mary Shelley in their travels.
