Review: The Flash #85 Paves The Way For The Final Battle By Williamson, Duce And Guerrero

by Tony Thornley
Cover by Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona & Tomeu Morey

Perhaps the greatest adversary in Barry Allen’s life has been with Captain Cold. Even with Grodd and the Reverse Flash, no one has more consistently and effectively challenged The Flash than Cold. And The Flash #85 shows us potentially their greatest battle.

Joshua Williamson, Christian Duce, Luis Guerrero, and Steve Wands begin the end of the Rogues’ reign.

Golden Glider, Heat Wave and Weather Wizard help prepare the Flashes for the battle to come with Captain Cold. As Barry regains his confidence and control, Golden Glider reveals the faults in the plan Cold is using: her plan. It’s all leading to the greatest fight in Barry’s life, but is it a fight the Flash can win?

This issue is a bit of the slower side, but Williamson knows that. He sets up the pieces for the last chapter of this story, but more importantly he uses the opportunity to build the characters up. The most key character to get spotlight is Golden Glider, who’s never really gotten a focus like this, finally fleshing her out after all these years.

Duce’s line is fluid and energetic. He does exactly what every Flash artist needs to in depicting still images that feel like they’re moving quickly. His depiction of Cold is intimidating and frightening. It all builds to a great closing sequence of the conflict between the two. I really hope to see more of Duce’s work on the title.

I’m excited to see where this story comes up, and how it changes the central antagonistic relationship.

The Flash #85 is available now from DC Comics.
