Review: An Era Ends In Valkyrie: Jane Foster #7 By Ewing, Aaron, Pérez And Aburtov

Death is dying, and only the world’s superhuman physicians can save it. It’s a wild set-up for Valkyrie: Jane Foster #7 and one that brings an era of Marvel storytelling to an end.
Jason Aaron, Al Ewing, Pere Perez, Jesus Aburtov and Joe Sabino face death in the most unexpected way in Ewing’s last issue on the series.
Jane Foster and the super-doctors continue forward against the disease that is killing the embodiment of Death. Each of the doctors find a purpose along the way, until Jane finds herself faced with the dying entity. She has an impossible choice- allow Death to die and change the universe, or save it?
This issue is full of high concept craziness, and I love it. Aaron and Ewing jump from concept to concept, exploring mythology of both Valkyrie and the realm of Death. It’s an exciting superhero adventure on the surface, but some great world building and use of the entire Marvel Universe when digging deeper into the story.
My personal favorite was the script namedropping one of the most horrifying and mind-bending recent concepts we’ve seen- the Cancerverse. It’s a significant mention that shows how easily the entire universe can change. I’ll miss Ewing’s work on the series, but I’m glad that it will continue from here.
Perez has a tall order in this issue. While there is plenty of story that’s fairly straightforward, it quickly shifts into the surreal. He’s able to make that change easily and effortlessly, making the fantastic feel natural. He’s quickly proving to be one of the best rising stars at Marvel, and this issue proves why.
I’m excited to see where the series is going to go next. I’ll definitely miss Ewing’s touch, but he’s definitely headed for bigger and better things. Meanwhile I’m at the edge of my seat for Jane Foster’s next adventure.
