‘The Batman’ Offers First Look At Dark Knight In Costume Test Video

by Erik Amaya

As is now something of a tradition for Warner Bros. Pictures, the studio has released a costume test of The Batman‘s Robert Pattinson in his Dark Knight costume. The dimly lit 56-second video offers a few details of the costume — like the bat sigil being composed of various bits — but also suggests some of the film’s tone.

The camera test follows on the heals of both Bird of Prey and The Joker, which also used short videos to reveal the stars’ looks and drive attention away from paparazzi shots as both productions went out on location. It’s a philosophy we appreciate as superhero costumes rarely look great in surreptitious set shots — see early photos from The Flash or Shazam! to see what we mean — and the videos offer a better sense of mood than even a photo shot in controlled conditions.
For Pattinson’s Batman, we can at least say the change in frame is interesting. In lieu of the broad-chested design of the last few decades, the actor’s slimmer build suggests more of the Bronze Age character. That may be intentional as director Matt Reeves intends to make a film about the character’s detective leanings; a concept popularized in the 1970s. The film is also said to take its cues from Batman: The Long Halloween, which centered on a younger Batman. Perhaps Pattinson will get that bigger physique in a subsequent film, but we’re happy to see the Batman in more human proportions. As for the costume itself, we’re used to spandex turning into armor for big budget features. But it will be interesting to see how it looks in action.
The Batman arrives in theaters on June 25th, 2021.
