Review: Meet The New Monster Society In ‘SHAZAM!’ #11
by Tony Thornley

The SHAZAM! Family has faced the entirety of the Magiclands. However, the worst of those realms is about to come to them, as we’re reintroduced to the Monster Society of Evil!
Geoff Johns, Scott Kolins, Mike Atiyeh, and Rob Leigh bring one of the DCU’s worst villain teams back in SHAZAM! #11!
The Wizard Shazam has attacked Billy and his family, having found them unworthy of his power. However, the young heroes more than prove themselves. And it’s a good thing too, as Mister Mind releases the most horrific version of the Monster Society ever… and the evil worm may be even closer to Billy and family than they realize…

Johns crafts a very fun chapter here. He moves all the pieces into place and then twists it cruelly. The cliffhanger is perfectly executed, and plays off everything we’ve seen in the series so far. It’s not just a villain reveal, but it’s the inverse of the family bonds readers have experienced for over a year.

Kolins has a great take on the emotional stakes of the story. The kids retain their youth in the hero forms, but also their bonds as a family. The Monster Society, especially Sivana and Mister Mind, are horrifying, and each are uniquely designed to fit their origins.

The family is a tough spot, and it’s a great read for us.
SHAZAM! #11 is available now from DC Comics.
