The War Finally Comes To Freeland In A Preview Of The Black Lightning Season Finale
by Erik Amaya
Freeland’s airspace may finally be open to the rest of Earth-Prime, but it seems Jefferson (Cress Williams) and his ersatz team of outsiders will have to face the Markovian invasion by themselves. And as this preview for the season finale of Black Lighting suggests, it is going to get worse before it gets better. Citizens are being shot in the streets, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) has been abducted by the Markovians, and Black Lightning’s fight with Gravedigger (Wayne Brady) rages across the city. But with the briefcase still in Gambi’s (James Remar) possession, will there be a chance to end the war peacefully?
Meanwhile, we wish Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Grace (Chantal Thuy) had managed to get married before the war came to Freeland. We’ve never been completely happy with their story and it always feels like Grace gets the short end. Not completing the ceremony suggests she may not make it out of the season alive; which would be a bad look not just because of Grace’s LGBQTIA status, but also the show’s seeming resistance to making her a genuine part of the story.
The revelation about Gravedigger’s connection to the Pierce family makes sense as it establishes why they are stable metas. Of course, this aspect of the story feels like it was plotted before the Crisis brought Freeland to Earth-Prime as metas are not quite the rare resource they seemed to be in the show’s original reality. Then again, it is easy to think certain governments would still abuse metas of color for extremely nefarious schemes.
Black Lightning airs Mondays on The CW.
