A Profane Pyre: ‘SFSX #7’ Reviewed

Jones has just killed Nick, leaving Sylvia, Casey, Avory, George, and Denis in a state of shock. Sylvia immediately strikes back and the Dirty Mind crew make their escape in a broadcasting van. Outside, the Party is about to begin their mass burning of “profane” and forbidden items. Avory just wants to go back to the Dirty Mind, but Sylvia, Casey, and Denis are committed to sharing what they’ve discovered at the Pleasure Center with the world. They have the recordings of everything they’ve seen and the means to share it. They have everything they need in order to expose the Party–they just need the courage to do it.
SFSX #7 brings the first arc of the series to a close. The Dirty Mind team has rescued George, found Jones, and discovered the dark secrets of the Pleasure Center. Unfortunately, they’ve lost Nick along the way and Jones may be beyond saving.
It’s a fast-moving and intense issue. There are a few genuine shockers and the ending was truly unexpected. Fortunately, there are some happy aspects to the conclusion and the comic provides a satisfying ending on the whole.
The story leaves a lot hanging that could easily be used for another volume. Not all villains are defeated and the Party is far from being overthrown.
Jen Hickman finishes strong in the visuals department. The style drips with personality and the characters are amply expressive. The visuals of the Party rally are reminiscent of some recent history in the U.S. and that does make the scene a bit more visceral. Hickman’s color work, with flatting help from Alyssa Eleftheriou, is atmospheric and it adds to the emotional pitch of the comic.
SFSX #7 is a strong finish for the first story arc of this very horny comic book series. This comic’s sex positivity, sharp satire, endearing cast, and strong visuals have made this one of Image’s best new titles of recent months, and this issue easily earns a recommendation.
