Netflix Picks Up Jeff Lemire’s ‘Sweet Tooth’

Netflix continues its association with the dearly departed Vertigo imprint.
The streamer announced today that it will go forward with an adaptation of Jeff Lemire‘s Sweet Tooth. First optioned for development at Hulu in 2018, the project has leapt from that service to Netflix, a la Locke & Key. The series focuses on Gus, a deer-boy hybrid, who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his origins.
The one-hour, eight-episode series will be executive produced and ran by both Hap and Leonard‘s Jim Mickle and Beth Schwartz of Arrow fame and feature the acting talents of Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, and Will Forte. James Brolin will also serve as the voice of the narrator. Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran also serve as executive producers while Team Downey’s Evan Moore will produce.
It is unclear when the series will go into production, but it joins The Sandman as another series based on comic books originally published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. Sadly, the imprint folded late last year, but leaves behind a legacy of interesting and proactive material; some of which has already been adapted in television series like Doom Patrol, Preacher, and Swamp Thing.
