‘Glitter Vipers’ Takes A Bite Out Of Kickstarter

by James Ferguson

Sometimes you hear a title of a book or movie and just know that you have to check it out. That’s how I felt when writer Joe Glass shared Glitter Vipers on Twitter, especially with that awesome logo. The original graphic novel, written by Glass, illustrated by Katie Fleming, colored by Kelly Fitzpatrick, lettered by Lucas Gattoni, and edited by Ted Brandt is on Kickstarter now.

The comic is set in Manchester, UK and follows drag queen Bi Phallicia and her friends after they fall victim to an anti-queer hate crime. Their support group helps them decide to form a gang and take to the streets to protect the Manchester Gay Village from hate and violence as the Glitter Vipers. As they take their righteous anger to the town, they stumble upon a larger threat trying to turn the queer community into public enemy number one.

Writer Joe Glass says:

The idea essentially came from me reading news stories about queer people facing horrid, often violent hate crimes, and feeling so powerless in the face of it. It created a feeling of wanting to fight back, not just in the sense of protest and social rights, but to physically fight back at the violence perpetrated on us. Glitter Vipers stemmed from looking to explore that violent anger, the feelings of dealing with it and how minority communities have a right to feel that rage yet often face backlash for it.

Rewards for the Kickstarter campaign include digital and physical copies of the book, stickers, patches, and more. At the time of this writing, it is over halfway funded with plenty of time to go. The campaign ends on July 23rd, 2020.
