Previewing The’Tammy & Jinty Special 2020′: Weird Boarding Schools & The Return Of Cat Girl!

by Richard Bruton

Summer 2020 isn’t exactly the summer we all thought it would be, but there’s one little bright beam of comics light coming our way in the shape of the brand new Tammy & Jinty Special!

Unlike the 2019 Tammy & Jinty Special which was a series of short tales, inside the 2020 T&J Special you’ll find just two longer tales – but oh boy, they’re wonderful tales indeed.
Boarding School by Rachael Smith (Wired Up Wrong) and Yishan Li (Hellboy & The B.P.R.D.) and Cat Girl by RAMZEE (Zorse) and Elkys Nova (Roy of the Rovers), all under a cover from Marguerite Sauvage (DC Bombshells).

In Boarding School, writer Rachael Smith and artist Yishan Li tell us the tale of Tabatha and her little brother Richard, the only pupils in a mysterious old building.
The only other people they have ever seen are the Governesses – four teachers who fawn over the younger sibling but treat Tabatha very badly. Does it have something to do with Richard’s special power? When Tabatha finds a new friend in the outside world, her old life quickly starts to unravel.
Children kept out of time, discovering just who or what they are, all wrapped up in a wonderful adventure that’s fun and fantastic at the same time, with Yishan Li’s artwork absolutely nailing the strange feel of the thing. Excellent stuff to open with…

With Cat GirlRAMZEE & Elkys Nova bring a classic character back when an old favourite from the pages of the Sally returns. Fourteen-year-old Claire finds an old cat costume in her mother’s wardrobe and wears it to a social media star’s party, unaware that she has just donned the magical mantle of the super-sleek crime fighter, Cat-Girl!
A perfectly done update of one of those classic girls strips of old, keeping the sense of fun and adventure of the original and bringing it right into the now.
In between the two tales, there’s a great interview with Alison Fitt (nee Christie) talks about her experiences of working on the Tammy and Jinty comics on strips such as Heart of Stone, Somewhere over the Rainbow, and the delightful Ping-Pong Paula – and we even get to see some of Fitt’s wonderful work alongside Jim Baikie on the aforementioned strip featuring a young girl’s Ping-Pong adventures!

And finally, Karl Stock takes a look at the origins of Giorgio Giorgetti‘s Cat Girl…

The Tammy & Jinty Special 2020 is published by Rebellion and the Treasury of British Comics on 12 August.
So, time for a little preview of what’s inside…
