Jamie Foxx’s Electro To Return For Third MCU ‘Spider-Man’ Film
by Erik Amaya
The walls between the Spider-Verse and the Marvel Cinematic Universe continue to crumble.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Foxx is in “final talks” to return as Electro in the third MCU Spider-Man film. The actor previously played the character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 — a film so critically panned, it led Sony into its sometimes uneasy partnership with Marvel Studios.
Of course, it is unclear how much of that previous outing will matter as the duo of films starring Andrew Garfield exist outside of both the MCU and Sony’s ever-expanding Spider-Verse. Nonetheless, the narrative conceits of both universes allow for parallel worlds to exist. It is possible Foxx will reprise that exact Electro. Then again, much like J.K. Simmons‘s return as J. Jonah Jameson, the MCU version of the character could be different.
But the actor’s appearance also suggests the ties between Marvel and Sony are actually growing. Rumors constantly persist with the notion that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will aid in the production of Olivia Wilde‘s presumed Spider-Woman film. Additionally, the most recent trailer for the upcoming Morbius featured posters alluding to Peter’s (Tom Holland) current troubles in the MCU and a surprise guest spot by Micheal Keaton as Adrian Toomes. Though the current Spider-Man deal extends Peter’s time in the MCU for the third film and one additional appearance — which most assume will occur in an Avengers-like team-up film — it seems Sony and Marvel (or parent company Disney) have mended their working relationship with an eye toward keeping all the films in one universe.
Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts is set to return, as are castmembers Zendaya, Marissa Tomei, and Jacob Batalon. The film is supposed to begin production later this Fall with a current release date set for December 17th, 2021.
