Emerald City Comic Con And C2E2 Move To December 2021

The 2021 convention calendar continues to change amid so much uncertainty.

ReedPOP announced Tuesday that both C2E2 and Emerald City Comic Con will move from their typical schedule in the early parts of the year to December 2021. Generally the first major convention of the year — indeed, it was the only one to occur in 2020 — C2E2 2021 will happen from December 10th to the 12th, 2021. ECCC, originally scheduled for an early March weekend next year, will take place from December 2nd to the 5th, the weekend before C2E2.

In lieu of the spring ECCC, a third online Metaverse event will take place, although it is unclear if it will happen over the March dates originally set aside for ECCC.

In a statement (via GamesRadar), ReedPOP president Lance Fensterman said, “If we have learned anything from our experiences this year, it’s how resilient our fans, creators, exhibitors, and sponsors are. We’ve come together to support and uplift one another, adapting to our new normal to create meaningful experiences that capture the community and excitement felt at any one of our shows … Now, we’re ready to look forward to 2021 and gearing up to bring you the best slate of comic con events possible, both in the real and virtual world.”

The switch to late 2021 is hardly surprising. Even with early word of a COVID-19 vaccine, March is too early in the process to consider holding an event which attracts nearly 100,000 people to share close quarters. Under the best of circumstances, con-goers often come home with less serious infections; known affectionately as “Con Crud.”

Because of the ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19, we will be surprised if any of the major conventions occur before October 2021. New York Comic Con seems like the show best positioned to inaugurate the post-COVID era, but even that is still a tenuous hope. Of course, we hope to be proven wrong and safe con-going resume sooner rather than later.
