Sadly, Daimon Helstrom’s inevitable fate has come to pass.
EW reports Hulu has cancelled the series — the last scripted live action drama from the former Marvel Television regime. The series stared Tom Austen as the Son of Satan and Sydney Lemmon as his sister Ana. Elizabeth Marvel also appeared as their mother Victoria, while Robert Wisdom played an interesting take on Caretaker.
Originally, the program was to be part of a “Adventure Into Fear” sub-group with a Ghost Rider series starring Gabriel Luna and “three or four” other programs. Former Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb was spearheading the project for Hulu when Marvel Studios took control of all Marvel Entertainment creative initiatives in the summer of 2019. As a result, “Adventure Into Fear” was tabled, Hulu passed on Ghost Rider, and Loeb planned his exit from the company. Helstrom still managed to go into production, but without seeming support from Marvel Studios’ new television division — itself already committed to Disney+ series like WandaVision — or, indeed, the Marvel logo when it premiered in October.
Reaction to the series was mixed with some noting its orphan status as an unavoidable damper on the proceedings. We quite enjoyed the performances, though; with Lemmon and Marvel as standouts.
While the end of Helstrom marks the end of Marvel Television’s live action efforts, two animated series — M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey — are still forthcoming from the company and Hulu. Marvel Television also produced the recent Disney+ docu-series, Marvel 616.
Also, Daimon’s fade-to-black clears the way from Marvel Studios’ new TV initiative, which will feature supporting players from Marvel Studios films in starring roles and fulfill the “it’s all connected” vibe Loeb attempted to create with series like Daredevil and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sadly, that plan never quite coalesced as studio politics created a wedge between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television and left various series feeling as orphaned as Helstrom. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will honor them by inviting actors back to play characters like Matt Murdoch or Ana Helstrom.
