Matthew Rhys To Star In FX’s ‘Wyrd’

by Erik Amaya

Matthew Rhys is headed back to television.

Deadline reports the actor will star in FX’s upcoming Wyrd. Inspired by Curt Pires and Antonio Fuso‘s Dark Horse comic, it centers on Rhys’s Wyrd, an alien in exile on Earth who must assimilate when all contact with his own species stops. While trying to fit in, he also investigates paranormal sightings and like Dr. Sam Beckett before him, attempt to find a way home. It is interesting to note, though, the use of the word “inspired” in Deadline’s reporting. It is unclear how faithful the television show will be the 2019 comic book series or if that is even a concern in this case.

Rhys will also serve as an executive producer, as will his partner in all things, Keri Russell. Sheldon Turner, Jennifer Klein, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg and Chris Tongue are also on board as executive producers.

As with all recent announcements, it is unclear how quickly the program will make it to air. Indeed, FX’s saga to bring Y: The Last Man to its lineup is almost as rich and complex as the comic book series the cable outlet has been trying to adapt for the last several years. Add to that the on-going difficulties with the COVID-19 pandemic and it could still be sometime before Rhys is actually playing Wyrd.
