Plans for Snowpiercer‘s third season are moving full-steam ahead.
Variety reports the series will add Archie Panjabi to the cast in an as-yet unspecified role. The program, which went through a long and painful development process, became a surprise hit for TNT in early 2020. But the cable channel clearly had some confidence in it as it quickly produced a season season, which is currently airing.
Based on the graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, the series takes place seven years after the world enters a new Ice Age. The Snowpiercer is a train in constant movement. Its various cars form a class system and Layton (Daveed Diggs) emerges as the leader of a revolution against the ruling class. But with Season 2, the real Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) — the person Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) once worked for and has been impersonating since Snowpiercer started its perpetual run across the globe — arrives in a train of his own. He brings with him Melanie’s daughter Alexandra (Rowan Blanchard) and compelling reasons for just about everyone to join his cause. Can Layton maintain any semblance of peace as all these forces conspire to derail Snowpiercer? Also, can Melanie follow the clues to a new form of survival for the passengers of both trains?
We’ll admit the show is still a little to “TNT” for our liking, but we applaud its ability to beat the odds and continue. Three seasons for a show like Snowpiercer in the middle of a pandemic and so much political strife is remarkable. We just hope TNT knows it needs a proper, well-paced ending.
Snowpiercer airs Mondays on TNT.
