The Roaring Twenties Return With A Bang In ‘Mafiosa’ From Dark Horse Comics

by James Ferguson

Take a trip back to the mafia-dominated New York during the Roaring Twenties in Mafiosa, a new original graphic novel debuting in October from Dark Horse Comics. Based on an original story by Thomas Brooke from Portland’s Rainwerks Studio, creators Sunshine Barbito, Alessia Alfano, Débora Caritá, Ronda Pattison, and Mariacristina Federica team up to tell a tale of romanticism and brazen violence.

Mafiosa follows Nicoletta, the youngest in a Sicilian-American family with aspirations to join her brothers in the family business. They’re not baker or candlestick makers though. They’re an organized crime syndicate running the streets of Manhattan. When Nicoletta confronts her father, announcing her desire to join, a crisis ensues. She refuses to take no for an answer, taking it upon herself to prove she has what it takes. Nicoletta plunges headfirst into a world of brutality with her own ideas to capitalize on the cocaine drug trade.

“What draws me into the world of organized crime is the juxtaposition of tradition, loyalty, hyper-morality, and what boils down to murderous greed. We wanted to take this familiar and popular storytelling genre; set in the roaring twenties, but show you this world from a different perspective in order to create a dialogue. For me, this story is about desire and how it affects people once it takes over completely.”– Sunshine Barbito

Mafiosa is not just about a woman’s rise within the Marchesi crime family. It’s a genre-busting look at how the players in the mafia story are transformed when Nicoletta proves better at the deadly game than her male counterparts. New York has a new player in town.

Mafiosa is set for release on October 13th, 2021 at your local comic shop and on October 26th, 2021 at bookstores and Amazon. It will retail for $19.99.
