‘Twin Blades’ Mixes Aztec Mythology With Science-Fiction On Kickstarter

by James Ferguson

Comics is a medium capable of doing just about anything. You can have the biggest, boldest ideas in these four-color pages and that definitely includes Twin Blades. The one-shot comic, currently on Kickstarter is a blend of Aztec mythology, sword manga, and sci-fi all mixed into a 44-page action-packed story.

Written by Jarred Luján, illustrated by Julio Suarez, colored by Rocco Langg, and lettered by Gabriela Downie, Twin Blades centers on twin siblings Xiomara and Basilio Gutierrez who inherit two magic macuahuitl as children. These came with the responsibility of Wielders, setting out to defend the Fifth Sun, but that’s not the only threat coming in the present day. Basilio wants to move on with his life, but his sister is holding strong to her belief and responsibility.

With this schism forming between the Wielders and the other gods distracted, the god Tezcatlipoca sends his champion Yaoti to kill the Fifth Sun and start a new universe in his name. The twins must stand together in order to save the universe or fall prey to Yaoti’s strength.

Rewards for the Kickstarter campaign include digital and physical copies of Twin Blades. The limited rewards including script reviews and copies of Luján’s previous work, Dry Foot, were scooped up quick. The campaign runs through April 15th, 2021.
