DC FanDome 2021: DC Comics Takes On A Chinese Classic With The Announcement Of ‘Monkey Prince’ Maxi-Series

DC Comics recently celebrated talent with South Asian heritage in the special one-shot DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration #1. And in this anthology comic we saw the debut of the DCU’s Monkey Prince, a character inspired by the Chinese stories of the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Now, as announced on yesterday’s DC FanDome, the Monkey Prince, a.k.a. Marcus Sun, gets his own 12 part maxi-series, Monkey Prince, coming February 2022 from DC Comics.

Written by Gene Luen Yang 楊謹倫 with art by Bernard Chang 張伯納. The series will kick off on the Lunar New Year, February 1 with a series of character designs revealed on DC FanDome and represented below featuring Sun Wukong, King Bull Demon, Princess Iron Fan, Red Boy, and Erlang Shen who will be helping Monkey Prince defend the heavenly realm against Darkseid:


What’s more, DC Comics have posted a special digital first issue, ‘Apokolips in the Heavenly Realm’ which you can read here now.
“In this new tale, available now, you’ll see the classic Journey to the West characters—Sun Wukong, King Bull Demon, Princess Iron Fan, Red Boy, and Erlang Shen—defending the heavenly realm against Darkseid and his parademons!”
‘Apokolips in the Heavenly Realm’ is by writer Gene Luen Yang 楊謹倫, artist Bernard Chang 張伯納, artist (for flashback scenes) Billy Tan of Tan Comics 比利唐 of 唐漫文化, colorist Sebastian Cheng 鍾偉傑, and letterer Janice Chiang 蒋慧珍. DC’s Jessica Chen 陳穎珊 edits Monkey Prince.
