Z2 Comics Celebrates 20 Years of Gorillaz With ‘The Gorillaz Art Book’

by Richard Bruton

Z2 Comics reunite with Gorrilaz for the first-ever Gorillaz Art Book, coming out in Spring 2022…

The Gorillaz Art Book Standard Edition Cover by Jamie Hewlett

It’s going to be 20 years since Gorillaz burst onto the music scene with their eponymous debut album, released in 2001. And now, to celebrate the two decades and their seven albums, Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett invited more than 40 creators to offer new interpretations of 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs in one expansive volume in the Gorillaz Art Book.

The art book features brand new artwork by Hewlett and a host of guest contributions from friends and admirers of the band, all creating all new interpretations of the World’s Biggest Virtual Band.

So, you get the likes of Robert Smith (The Cure), Jack Black, Laurie Vincent (Slaves), Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, Tara Billinger (Clone High), Erik Fountain (Adventure Time), Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoonist Marianna Ignazzi, French fashion photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, music video director Ruffmercy. Plus, from the world of comics, there’s comic artist and Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Brendan McCarthy, Glyn Dillon, Vanesa R. Del Rey, Ana Godis, artist, cartoonist, and painter William Wray, Andrew C. Robinson, Andre Carrilho, Kim Jung Gi, and quite a few more!

Gorillaz have always collaborated with music but this is the first time we’ve done an art collaboration. I’ve really enjoyed working with so many of my favorite artists and the result is this amazing book.
Jamie Hewlett

The Gorillaz Art Book will be available this Spring 2022 from participating retailers and can be ordered directly from Z2 Comics.

“We’re delighted to help bring so many intoxicating interpretations of the Gorillaz into one tome. The Gorillaz Art Book embraces the vibrant collaboration that Jamie and Damon introduced two decades ago and extends it to an amazing community of transgressive artists. The results speak for themselves.” – Z2 Comics Publisher Joshua Frankel

No images from the book yet, but hey, look at the list of artistic names involved – should be rather grand. In the meantime, here’s a few old Jamie Hewlett Gorillaz images for you…
