A Heart-Warming, Cold War Sci-Fi: ‘Primordial’ #6 Advance Review

After last issue, I felt I needed to read Primordial #6 with a more open mind, or open heart at least. I’ve never been one to get too emotionally attached to any fictional characters, whether on film or in comics and know all too well that what makes most people emotional just down’t do it for me. And maybe that was hindering my views on this sci-fi series that started off so well. After all, everyone loves a cute animal, right? And this story has not one but three of the furry critters, all stranded in space and just wanting to get home. Even after decades traipsing other dimensional domains. 

And so with this in mind, I cannot see how readers of this book won’t be left with a warm glow after reading Jeff Lemaire’s script, and blown away once again by the amazing, geometrical genius of Andrea Sorrentino’s artwork.

This is a story of hope, against all odds, and the love we have for our pets. A love that we often think is requited by those pets, and in this case, most definitely is. A sentiment any pert owner, or animal lover, can attest to and one affirmed in this comic book. A very personal story given a grandeur courtesy of Sorrentino’s spectacular visuals that gobble up pages with its bombastic scale. It’s that same feeling one got when the aline space ship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind is unveiled. Large, awesome, sublime; pushing everything else from the mind’s eye. And works really well on the printed page too. Here, the pictures really do the talking.

A mind-bending, heart-warming sci-fi series that offers closure in one sense, while leaving the reader pondering a world in which the USSR dominates. A bitter-sweet ending to a familiar story with vast cosmic overtures.
