‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Goes To Series

HBO Max’s corner DC Universe expands by one more series.
The service announced Thursday that it has ordered Dead Boy Detectives to series. The program, based on characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner in the pages of The Sandman, centers on “a ghost story that explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace.” And as the title implies, the dead duo will investigate mysteries as part of their afterlife. George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri star as Edwin and Charles while Kassius Nelson plays Crystal Palace.
The series also stars Briana Cuoco as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell as the Night Nurse who first appeared in a Season 3 episode Doom Patrol, Yuyu Kitamura as Niko, and Jenn Lyon as Esther. Steve Yockey serves as showrunner with Doom Patrol‘s Jeremy Carver, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter join him as executive producers.
“I’ve been obsessed with this comic for a long time, so it’s a true passion project. And Jeremy, Berlanti Productions, DC, WBTV, HBO Max — they’re all encouraging me to run with every wild, bizarre, and unsettling choice. The result is going to be really dark fun,” Yockey said in a statement.
Like Titans and Doom Patrol before it, Dead Boy Detectives will presumably take place in its own shard of the DC Multiverse — even though the characters first debuted in an episode of Doom Patrol (played by a different trio of actors) — allowing the series to feature its own takes on shared DC character or the room to focus on its own quirky set of characters. The program will also be separate from Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman, which suggests that series will likely omit parts of the “Season of Mist” storyline which first introduced the Dead Boy Detectives.
It is unclear when the series will debut on the service, but we’re willing to bet on it beginning its run sometime in 2023.
