Aiyana is an indigenous teen from South Dakota with a life like any other, but her understandings of reality is flipped upside down when she journeys to a special world where she will meet new friends and foes, and learns to embrace her family’s proud heritage. Pursued by the trickster Raven, Aiyana struggles to get back home. Her dangerous journey through the Spirit World tests her fortitude and challenges her to embrace her Lakota heritage. But will it be enough to defeat the cruel and powerful Raven?
That is Dynamite’s pitch for their upcoming young adult graphic novel, Thunderous. Co-written by M.L. Smoker and Natalie Peeterse with art from Dale Deforest and a cover by Oriol Vida, the book aims to deliver a “memorable coming of age tale that will appeal to all kinds of readers” while also dispelling some of the long-standing assumptions about Native Americans.
“The importance of new narratives that are formed from the creativity, resilience and power of Native American communities are necessary to correct the pervasive and damaging stereotypes, misconceptions, and ideas that exist in this country about us,” Smoker explained in a statement. “I hope this is a story that resonates for many children, but, in particular that some Native youth will see themselves reflected in literature and believe they can be their own authors, painters, musicians, and creators in the future. Because representation matters.”
Thunderous is part of Dynamite’s deal with Curiosity Ink Media to produce a wide range of children’s books and graphic novels. It is currently available to preorder via an Indiegogo campaign. The book is expected to ship in May.
