Your family issues are nothing compared to Rogue Sun’s. That makes for a good story. Add in strong visuals for a fight that dominates the entire issue, and you have a good entry into this young series.
For the first issues of Red Sun, reluctant hero Dylan Bell had to fight bad guys while wrestling with his own demons, as well as a delinquent, dead father who now was trying to coach him from beyond the grave. His half-sister released a deadly demon to steal the stone that turns him into the superhero. As if all that weren’t bad enough, now mom is coming after him as well. Oh, and she’s the one who killed his dad.
No wonder he’s a rogue son.
As revealed in last issue’s cliffhanger, mom Gwen now has powers and also wants the sun stone that causes Dylan to get his powers. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn how – but not why – Dylan’s parents separated and how Gwen sold her soul to get the powers necessary to protect her son. Writer Ryan Parrott wisely gives readers just enough answers – many of which beget new questions – to keep them coming back for more.
Parrott focuses this issue on the flashbacks and the three-way fight between Dylan, Gwen and baddie Demonika (plus Rogue Sun’s dead dad if you want to get technical). It keeps the issue interesting, while providing some variety and setting up future plot threads to explore. The issue also fleshes out Gwen’s character, who has largely been ignored until this point.
Artist Able is joined this time by Simone Ragazzoni, and the pair get to have some fun depicting Gwen’s conversion to the dark side along with the big fight that dominates the story. The pair are a good complement for one another visually. Having dual artists can sometimes lead to choppy storytelling, but that isn’t the case here.
While this ongoing series is still in its infancy, it has served up enough family drama to fill an omnibus. It will be interesting to see if this creative team chooses to continue to keep family as Rogue Sun’s true adversary.
Rogue Sun #5 will be available for purchase on June 22, 2022.
