SDCC 2022: Dynamite Plots ‘Garbage Pail Kids : Origins’ For October
by Erik Amaya
At long last, the origins of the Garbage Pail kids will be revealed.
Dynamite announced Tuesday its plans for Garbage Pail Kids: Origins — a comic book investigating the early days of the grotesque children popularized by the Topps trading card series. Adam F. Goldberg, Hans Rodionoff, Jeff Zapata and Chris Meeks will chronicle how Roy Bot, Brainy Janie, Snooty Sam, and more came to be. Employing the style of traditional comic book hero origins, the stories will also feature “one crazy surprise.” The first issue centers on Adam Bomb, from his days as a soda jerk to his transformation into an “All-American superhero,” to his days leading a team of Garbage Pail Kids to stop Nasty Nick.
“One of the most vivid memories of my childhood is walking into my second grade class to find everyone gathered around a binder. And in that binder — Garbage Pail Kids,” Goldberg said in a statement. “As the class clown, I was immediately hooked by the gallows humor and gross out gags.”
Zapata, a veteran of the Garbage Pail Kids line from the very start, added, “This idea has been a personal pet project of mine for years … This project is the perfect package of talent collaborating to fulfill a common vision to do something wild and different with a classic brand.”
Additionally, Rodionoff said, “I think what’s exciting for me is that this book will hopefully entertain the diehard fans, but also might be the first GPK book that people who aren’t already fans of the universe will pick up and it will open their minds to the wonderfully weird world of the Garbage Pail Kids.”
In honor of the original card series’ A and B variants, the first issue will be supported by covers from Zapata, Ray Lago, Tom Bunk and reproductions of original card art.
Garbage Pail Kids: Origins #1 is due out in stores this October.
