In the year 2003, three mercenaries extracting a druglord out of Guinea-Bissau are forced to hide in the mystical region of Saloum, Senegal. Saloum is a genre-bending film with elements of action, horror, and western. What fascinates me is the filmmakers’ stylistic approach to storytelling. We see from the clip below how the music is timed to the actions of the characters. The use of red gloves and shoes also guides the eye to important focal points. This formalist use of the medium is what I love about movies beyond Hollywood.
Saloum will be streaming on Shudder September 8.
