The Lakes International Comics Festival(LICAF) adds to its ever-growing list of events with Yellow Submarine – Bill Morrison’s Odyssey Through Pepperland exhibition.
It’s time to join in an adventure with the Fab Four this autumn as Bill Morrison brings his Beatles’ Yellow Submarine exhibition, Yellow Submarine – Bill Morrison’s Odyssey Through Pepperland, to the Lakes International Comics Festival from 23rd September 2022 until 2nd January 2023.
It’s a journey through the Sea of Monsters, dodging the scary Suckophant and through the Sea of Green to Pepperland, complete with the Apple Bonkers, the dreaded Flying Glove and the final rescue of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from the Blue Meanies.
In 2018, Morrison, was commissioned by Titan Comics to mark the 50th anniversary of The Beatles film, Yellow Submarine. The resulting graphic novel was everything Beatles and comics fans could have wanted, a wonderful celebration of this important animation showcasing the music of the Beatles and the tone of the psychedelic 1960s. You can read Senior Editor Olly MacNamee’s interview with Morrison discussing this very book here.
Now, as part of the Lakes Festival, Morrison will bring his exhibition of material from the graphic novel, Yellow Submarine – Bill Morrison’s Odyssey Through Pepperland, including sketches, preparatory work, and some rare examples of The Beatles in comics, to Bowness on Windermere.
As part of Lakes International Comic Art Festival programme, the exhibition is free with admission to Windermere Jetty Museum.
Morrison’s famous in his right as an artist, including being Executive Editor of Mad Magazine, but has also been associated for decades with The Simpsons creator Matt Groening in his work as an illustrator and writer for The Simpsons, and writer and artist at Groening’s Bongo Comics.
Morrison began his career as an illustrator, painting dozens of movie posters including many for Walt Disney Pictures, such as The Little Mermaid, Bambi, Peter Pan, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. Following this, after Matt Groening founded Bongo Comics, Bill joined as art director and drew the very first Simpsons comic. He soon took on the role of Creative Director, editing Bongo’s entire output, and writing and drawing stories and covers.
Bill also worked with Groening on early character designs for the Futurama TV series and served as series Art Director. And he recently worked as character designer and artist on Groening’s Netflix series, Disenchantment.
“What better way to celebrate our tenth festival in our new main venue, Windermere Jetty Museum, than with Festival friend Bill Morrison’s Odyssey into Pepperland?
