The MCU’s Trevor Slattery To Return As Ben Kingsley Reportedly Joins ‘Wonder Man’ Series

Actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have to stick together.

Variety reports Ben Kingsley will once again play Trevor Slattery in the upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man. Based on the character created by Don Heck, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, it will center on Simon Williams, a superhero known for starting out as a villain in the comics and carrying on a career as an actor and stuntman. The Slattery character, first introduced in Iron Man 3 as the fake Mandarin, is one of the MCU’s few canonical actors and his presence in the series suggests Wonder Man will make use of Simon’s secondary career path. Variety reports Kingsley’s part is “major,” so perhaps the series will revolve around the making of a in-universe film. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community veteran Andrew Guest will serve as head writer.

Slattery’s second appearance came as a surprise during Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings (directed by Wonder Man executive producer Destin Daniel Cretton) and finally resolved a dangling plot thread from one of the Marvel short films. In the short, Slattery was abducted by representatives of “the real Mandarin,” who turned out to be Xu Shang-Chi’s (Simu Liu) father, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), the true leader of the Ten Rings. Although not fond of the “Mandarin” epithet, Wenwu kept Slattery a prisoner (of sorts) for the next several years as he also did not enjoy being misrepresented. Shang-Chi inadvertently freed Slattery as the events of his debut feature unfolded. Presumably, Wonder Man will see Slattery using some of the notoriety in his disappearance to book a role.

Well, provided the US government considers his years at the Ten Rings base as “time served” on his prison sentence. Or, perhaps, we’ll get a surprise appearance by Slattery late in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law‘s run as Jen (Tatiana Maslany) secures his release. Either way, it is fun to see the way Marvel keeps unlikely characters like Slattery alive.
