After ten years without a new release, Konami has decided to revive the Suikoden franchise. Amazing what one of the most successful Kickstarters of all time can do for a franchise’s popularity. Announced during Tokyo Game Show, both Suikoden I and Suikoden II are being remastered and released together as Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars.
This aims to be a pretty extensive remaster, with backgrounds being upgraded to HD and the pixel art getting new effects. It’s not quite HD-2D, but it is a pretty clear upgrade from the original PS1 titles. Other useful features include an auto-save and a way to fast-forward through battles for those who are used to faster-paced combat.
For fans disappointed this isn’t a new game, an interview with developers Yasuo Daikai and Takahiro Sakiyama (director of Suikoden V) on IGN talks about the intention to do more Suikoden if this title sells well enough. Whether that means a remaster of the remaining three mainline titles or a new game remains to be seen. Granted, series creator Yoshitaka Murayama has mentioned before he’d be glad to return to Suikoden if the opportunity presents itself. Though at the moment his focus is on Eiyuden Chronicle, the RPG he’s releasing next year.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam in 2023.
