Cartoonist Posy Simmonds Announced As 2022 Sergio Aragones Award Winner At Lakes International Comics Festival

As this year’s Lakes International Comics Art Festival finishes up for this year, we get the announcement that the brilliant Posy Simmonds has been announced as the latest recipient of the Sergio Aragones Award.

Simmonds joins an esteemed line-up of previous recipients for the Sergio Aragones International Award for Excellence in Comic Art – Dave McKean (2017), Hunt Emerson (2018), Charlie Adlard (2019), and Boulet (2021). And it’s absolutely right that she gets this award – indeed, it’s absolutely right that she gets ALL the awards.

Posy Simmonds – and you should all know this anyway – has a career in newspaper cartoons, illustration, and comics that spans 50 years. Her works include the graphic novels Gemma Bovary (1999), Tamara Drewe (2007), and Cassandra Darke (2018), numerous collections of her Posy strips, and so many wonderful children’s books over the years. All of them are essential reading, all of them perfect examples of a supremely talented artist, comic maker, and illustrator.

The Sergio Aragonés International Award for Excellence in Comic Art was established in 2017 by The National Cartoonists Society and is presented every year as part of The Lakes Internation Comic Art Festival.

Unfortunately, Posy had to cancel her appearance at this year’s LICAF due to a family illness, but accepted the Award in a video message, saying that the news she had received the Award “had really made the sun come out” and that she was “very pleased and excited to accept the Award and I would like to thank the NCS very, very much for this great honour.”

According to LICAF, after this years’ successful Festival, plans are already afoot for next year’s family-friendly Festival, along with their year-round projects promoting the message, “Comics Can Change the World”.
