‘Stargirl’ Continues To Turn The Corner In Season 3, Episode 7
by Frank Martin
It seems Stargirl has finally turned the corner from its noir mystery style of storytelling to something a bit more action and adventure oriented. That doesn’t mean the mystery has been solved, however. The question of who killed the Gambler and who has been surveilling Blue Valley still remains. But the pacing and tone of the show definitely feels different when compared to the season premiere. It’s unclear if the villain that made an appearance is in fact this season’s big bad or just a side baddie. Either way, this episode had some nice tension to break up the slow burn of previous episodes.
This plot saw the return of the Shade (Jonathan Cake) and Jennie (Ysa Penarejo) as the two have gotten their powers mixed up. Together, along with Courtney (Brec Bassinger) and Pat (Luke Wilson), they seek to free Jennie’s brother from Helix. This was a place introduced last season and home to the villainous Mister Bones (Keith David). Meanwhile, the other members of the JSA caused a blackout in Blue Valley in order to destroy all of the mysterious murderer/voyeur’s cameras.
All in all, not a lot to happened this episode. But that’s not too surprising as it’s part one of a two-part story. The JSA is closing in on whoever the big bad villain is and this episode did not feature a lot of the strife between them that previous episodes had. It would seem as if this story is going to be a bridge linking the mystery side from the first half of the season to the action side in the second half. During this time, there might be a slowdown as that transition takes place, which is fine. If past seasons of Stargirl are any indication, this will only mean that the show is gearing up for a great finale.
Stargirl airs Wednesdays on The CW.
