Webcomic Weekly: Gio Guimarães’ Has A Cat Problem

by Richard Bruton

Sometimes Weekly, always Webcomics in all their forms… time for a lively thing from Gio Guimarães, perfect for fans of Sandman and cats…

Saw this the other month, just after Sandman‘s bonus episode, ‘Dream of a Thousand Cats’ dropped:

As Gio Guimarães says:

We’re doomed… This came to my silly mind while re-watching the 11 episodes, so I HAD to draw it…

Just four pages long but one of those great little pieces inspired by Dream of a Thousand Cats (The Sandman issue 18, 1990, written by Neil Gaiman, art by Kelley Jones and Malcolm Jones III).

For those of you who don’t know, haven’t read it, or haven’t seen the Sandman show yet… give it a chance and enjoy Gio’s take on those pesky cats and their ideas of taking over…

‘Dream of a Thousand Cats’ was part of Gaiman’s ‘Dream Country storyline, four unconnected comics in Sandman #17-20, ‘Calliope’, ‘Dream of a Thousand Cats’, ‘Facade’, and the first of his Shakespeare tales, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Dream of a Thousand Cats’ takes your nice, cute, average little moggy and asks the questions: What if it wasn’t all this way? What if, once upon a time, cats were the masters and their humans were merely their servants and playthings? And what if, once upon a time, enough humans dreamt of a world where things were different?

Into this comes the Cat of Dreams, telling of this past life, filling cats with hope to change things back – if only enough of them could dream it into being.

So, when your cat comes to you and asks you where your Sandman comics are… time to start worrying…

And just to end, a little of Neil Gaiman, Kelley Jones, and Malcolm Jones III’s ‘Dream of a Thousand Cats’…
