Mystery And Monsters: Reviewing ‘Heart Eyes’ #3 From Vault Comics

‘Heart Eyes’ #3 introduces a mysterious new character, a watcher who seems to have healthy doubts about the monster-loving Lupe having observes her for quite some time. More mystery and more Lovecraftian horror from Dennis Hopeless and Victor Ibáñez.

8.5/10Its good to see, in Heart Eyes #3, that my Spidey-senses tingled about the monster-loving Lupe last issue are shared with at least one character in this post-apocalypse horror title. Although the identity of said character, and this issue’s narrator – seen from behind and wearing hood – is purposefully a mystery. But, whomever they are they certainly seem to know a lot about Lupe. Plus, s/he have the means to monitor her safely from a distance. Something s/he seems to have been doing for some time. And through this mystery narrator’s words we get more of an insight into the girl we know had a tough upbringing, but one who’s strange behaviour thus far cannot really be put down to her tragic past.
And, it is through this stranger’s eyes, and over some time, that we get a wider view of America and after the Lovecraftian incursion, as Lupe moves from place to place with death following her. Is she, therefore, responsible for the deaths of the many that she meets on her travels? Well, that’s the question posed and one, by this point, the reader must also be considering. A girl all adrift, but one who may not be as innocent as she initially seems.
Dennis Hopeless has created a story that’s certainly engaging as more and more mystery seems to be layered up with each issue. And while we are left wondering as to Lupe’s true intentions, Victor Ibáñez’s striking art will draw you in even more, like one of the tentacled creatures he has created for this series. Just look at this cross section he portrays in the art above to glimpse his immense talent. His eye for realism really sells the story’s horror too, while K.J. Díaz’s colours carefully craft a distinct contrast between the monsters from another dimension and this Earth’s own reality.
With each issue this story only seems to get darker, particularly when you witness a scene later on in this book where Lupe once more comes across people doing their best to survive this new nightmare reality. The horror grows and the mysteries thicken.
