‘Stargirl’ Recovers Its Stride In Season 3, Episode 9

by Frank Martin

After spinning its wheels for the majority of the season, Stargirl finally feels like it’s hit its stride and getting into the meat of the story. That’s not to say that the beginning of the season wasn’t enjoyable. It was different and modeled after a more noir mystery atmosphere. Nevertheless, the pacing didn’t pick up in terms of plot as quickly as it should have. This week’s episode finally enters that territory and viewers get to see the tension that’s been building for a while finally spill over.

The JSA comes back together and deals with their difficulties, specifically in terms of Cameron (Hunter Sansone). Courtney (Brec Bassinger) wants to tell him the truth, but Cameron’s grandmother, Lily (Kay Galvin), reaches a breaking point in terms of her tolerance. Just when Courtney was ready to reveal the truth, Lily arrives and stops her, quickly followed by Rick (Cameron Gellman), who believes they are the ones who have been spying on them. A battle breaks out that results in tragedy. Meanwhile, a secondary plot line has the Thunderbolt team looking for Cindy (Meg DeLacy). They don’t find her, but it takes the plot line into new and uncharted territory.

All in all, it was a great episode filled with drama and suspense. However, when compared to the past two seasons, an episode like this would have aired fairly early on. The quality of tension remained fairly high throughout the entirety of the earlier seasons. This (now final) season tried something different, but it waited too long before having a payoff. Now that the action is here, it is very enjoyable to see something that has been building for so long finally hit a climax. It’s not done yet either. There is still more aftermath to uncover and villains to face. Unfortunately, Stargirl has been canceled, so hopefully what remains will give the show the send off it deserves.
