‘Harley Quinn: Valentine’s Day Special’ Review

From the way Harley Quinn left off with its season three finale, a Valentine’s Day special seemed like the perfect idea. Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) were at the strongest point of their relationship since the series began. They both have committed to their relationship and are understanding in their separate roles. So seeing Harley’s excitement about Valentine’s Day makes sense. And the hijinks and shenanigans that the couple get into because of Harley’s determination to make it the best Valentine’s Day ever is completely on brand for the series. Also, the forty-minute run time is a gift for fans awaiting the fourth season.

The episode starts with Harley proclaiming that she is going to set up the best Valentine’s Day ever for Ivy. She even stages a heist during dinner so that the couple can track the robbers down and foil the heist as the perfect end to their evening out. When Ivy says that it was a very good Valentine’s Day, but not the best one she’s ever had, Harley decides to use a magic spell to give Ivy an unbelievable orgasm. It ends up so strong, though, that it spreads sexual pheromones all over Gotham. The result: Bane (James Adomian) — now gigantic and horny — attacks the city’s buildings in a sex frenzy.

These kinds of absurd antics are exactly why Harley Quinn fans tune into the series. It was so ridiculous that it’s almost even hard to comprehend and it somehow topped everything that the series has done previously! At the same time, it also had a very poignant message about relationships, love, and not needing to do a big, boisterous event in order to show someone they care. Add into the fact that the episode had various scenes of famous DC Comics couples talking about their relationship and this episode was immensely satisfying.
