Can Vampirella be a straight-up superhero?
That’s the question writer Dan Abnett and artist Pasquale Qualano will attempt to answer Dynamite’s upcoming Vampirella vs. The Superpowers. Joined by a new sidekick, Dyna Might, Vampi finds herself on a world “strangely similar to our own Earth of the 1940s” replete with the graft, corruption, and a Golden Age of superheroes.
Of course, long-time Vampirella fans will know she’s dabbled in some superheroing across the years, but as Abnett said in a statement, “Vampirella’s last two outings as a superhero were very much at the supernatural and cosmic end of the scale.” The time around, the writer wanted to “capture more of the street-level action of classic urban vigilante heroes, and throw in a retro dash of glamour, style, intrigue and noir.”
“This is a hard-boiled world of crime, hoodlums, mystery identities and dirty secrets,” he continued. “The elevator pitch this time around might be ‘L.A. Confidential with superpowers’. It’s an era that perfectly suits Vampirella as the femme fatale, and it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Additionally, the series will follow-up on ideas from Abnett’s previous series, Vampirella: The Dark Powers, Red Sonja: The Superpowers, and Vampirella vs. Red Sonja.
Supporting the first issue will be a series of covers from Sozomaika, Lesley “Leirix” Li, Junggeun Yoon, Joseph Michael Linsner, and Rebeca Puebla.
Vampirella vs The Superpowers begins its adventure this May.
