‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3, Episode 6 Review

In a lot of ways, this week’s episode of The Mandalorian felt the most Star Wars of them all.
There’s really nothing more Star Wars than a Jedi and an apprentice arriving on a planet to handle some sort of problem or diplomatic issue. While the Mandalorians certainly aren’t Jedi, the format works perfectly for this episode. It was a real down-and-dirty detective story that featured three cameos, a mystery entrenched in the galaxy’s history, and a fight that will set the course for the future of the Mandalorian people. While in some respects, it did feel like filler, but these kinds of episodes are inevitable. And if they’re going to exist, then this is the highest tier they should strive for.
Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) and Din (Pedro Pascal) arrive on a planet where her Mandalorian fleet is now stationed as an army for hire. Before they are granted an audience with the Mandalorians, they have to discover the source of a series of Droid malfunctions occurring across the city. They find out that the city’s head security official (Christopher Lloyd) is responsible for the malfunctions as he is still a Separatist at heart. When they finally are granted an audience with the Mandalorians, Bo-Katan wins in combat and Din finds a loophole to grant her the Darksaber, thus sealing her destiny as leader of the Mandalorians.
Ninety percent of this episode was a fun, isolated storyline that had a real buddy cop feel to it. It was engaging, interesting, and entertainment, even though it was largely separate from the larger Mandalorian storyline. Still, the episode ended on a strong note as Bo-Katan now wields the Darksaber and their quest to reunite their people is well underway. The rest of the season is still uncertain as Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) has yet to return and the current story lacks a main villain in his absence. Nevertheless, if the episodes that have streamed thus far are any indication, then this season is sure to end on a strong note.
