From The Depths Of Winter To The Joys Of Summer: Reviewing ‘The Seasons Have Teeth’ #1

There was a guy who showed up at the comic shop when I was in my early teens. He was brash and bright-eyed, older than all the other players at my table, and really into GWAR. He impressed us all with his apartment, love of odd movies, and book collection. He would spin wild tales of adventures he had when he was our age, most of them sounding like things out of a sitcom, and let us borrow his books and CDs for as long as we wanted.

While I have a lot of stories about running games with that guy at the table, one of the biggest impacts he had on me was a gift he gave me right before he married one of the other players at the table and the two of them moved away. It was two volumes of H.P. Lovecraft‘s collected tales.

I had read a lot of Vern and Howard and some Lovecraft up to that point in life, but I had not had access to some of the lesser-known works of the problematic Masshole known as Howard Phillips.

These two books were full of body horror, unspeakable and unknowable entities, and what I would consider totally unfiltered weird fiction. Most of the time after reading a story or two from these books I was left feeling disoriented and confused… but inspired and excited to see what new oddity was on the next page.

That feeling, the feeling of having experienced something reality altering that my brain is struggling to comprehend is how The Seasons Have Teeth has left me feeling… and I love it.

This book is haunting, and I mean that there are things here that have truly stuck with me since reading it. This 4-issue horror series from BOOM Studios is going to be a must-read on a lot of horror fans’ reading lists.

Out of the gate, you are thrust into a world that is as bleak as it is mesmerizing. The emotional weight of the main character Andrew’s regrets and sorrows is palpable, seeping through Dan Watters‘ brooding dialog and evocative internal narration, while being brought to life by Sebastian Cabral‘s stunning artwork that captures the foreboding melancholia of the story.

And just when you think you have a handle on the mood and where things are going, The Seasons Have Teeth takes a sudden and unexpected turn into the strange and otherworldly. Eldritch creatures and mysterious occurrences abound, leaving readers captivated by the sheer oddness and mystery of it all.

Cabral’s artistic choices  are nothing short of brilliant, with quiet still intimate flashbacks that crash into the sprawling open-air nightmarish happening that feel like they’ve stepped right out of Lovecraft’s dreamlands. The darkly atmospheric and strange elements of will delight fans of weird fiction and keep them hooked from cover to cover.
