Review: Fantasy Adventures, Pulse-Pounding Action, And Witty Humor In ‘Summoners War- Awakening’ # 1
by Anton Kromoff
Summary
Fans of beloved animated shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra will feel right at home in this brightly colored fantasy romp, filled with larger-than-life villains, witty airship captains, adorable creatures, and epic action beats that practically leap off the page.
Overall
9/10Welcome to the table,
My current weekly game is a blend of NPCs and players from three ongoing long-term games we have been playing for many, many years now. The majority of these stories revolve around a mysterious catastrophe that has befallen walled cities in The Dune Sea, a massive desert full of crystalline forests, twisting tunnels, and more secrets than Oprah’s book club*.
One of these cities has survived and is home to information brokers, griffin riders, iron enforcers, dubious airship captains, and a rat who writes best-selling novels (We all love Gary). All of these themes are very near and dear to my heart and define my particular favorite flavors of fantasy. I love big-set pieces, lovable protagonists that don’t feel too grim or dark, allies of questionable intent, and uniquely designed villains. Summoners War: Awakening gives me all that and more.

Picking up after the events of Summoners War: Legacy, the story starts with our heroes stranded in hostile territory, being pursued by a bounty hunter who seems to be more clockwork than cardiovascular. From the very first page, you’re thrown into a story that already feels like it’s in progress. f
And for fans of pulp stories, like myself, who enjoy going with the flow and seeing where the adventure takes us, this comic hits the mark. There’s no need to sit through pages of lengthy introductions or convoluted exposition. Instead, Summoners War: Awakening keeps you engaged and turning the pages with its fast-paced storytelling.

Written by Justin Jordan, with art by Luca Claretti, colors by Igor Monti, and lettering by Deron Bennett, Summoners War: Awakening strikes a perfect balance between looming dread and chuckle-inducing humor. As you flip through the pages, you can almost hear the witty banter and feel the adrenaline-pumping action.

Now, I’ll be honest, as a comic fan, I’m usually a tough sell when it comes to adaptations of video games, especially mobile games. However, Summoners War: Awakening exceeded all my expectations. The characters are well-designed, the dialogue is fun and engaging, and the overall reading experience is highly enjoyable. This book is a prime example of how a comic based on a video game can be done right.

Don’t let your skepticism hold you back. If you’re a fan of fantasy adventures, pulse-pounding action, and witty humor, give Summoners War: Awakening a chance. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
Summoners War: Awakening #1 will be in comic shops tomorrow.
*More secrets than Oprah’s book club – The Secret was a self-help quasi-mystic take control your life kinda book. It was part of Oprah’s book club when that was a big deal. For those of you who were not around during the age of daytime television, Oprah was a talk show host with an almost world-leader level of sway over middle-class pop culture. I worked in a bookstore when this book was in her book club and people were losing their minds over it. We sold a lot of copies, hence “more secrets than Oprah’s book club.”
