‘Moon Knight’ Strikes Twice This July

When the Moon hits your face, and your boots start to shake, that-a-avatar of an ancient Egyptian god and you have probably found yourself on the wrong side of the Moon Knight.

I used to grab comics off the spinner racks in grocery stores when I was a little kid. Yeah, I’m that many years old. There was never a guarantee that the issues available would be in sequential order. You might get issue #120 one week, and two weeks later when you collected enough cans for recycling and found enough change on the sidewalk, you might get issue #127.

Sometimes it would be three or four months between titles showing up, or the grocery store or 7-11 might only get a few copies, so if you weren’t there close enough to the issue being placed into the little wire rack that went round and round, you didn’t get a copy. So when I was in single digits, I often had no idea what the heck was going on outside the issues I was reading.

Moon Knight was one of those characters who looked cool, but outside the Marvel trading cards I had, I had little to no backstory. For years, I thought he was an undead zombie man in a white jumpsuit who hung out with Ghost Rider*. I figured his hood was to keep his zombie face hidden.

This was just logical in my tiny brain with what little information I had to go on. Eventually, the guy who owned the comic shop where I would end up working for a bit taught me about a ton of characters, and I got my lore down pat and became quite the fan of the character. So the news of Moon Knight #25 hitting stands this July has me excited.

This July, an oversized anniversary issue of Moon Knight is hitting the shelves with a super-talented creative team, including writer Jed MacKay and artists Alessandro Cappuccio, Alessandro Vitti, and Partha Pratim.

Said to be a milestone issue, Moon Knight’s past and present will collide as he confronts a familiar yet new enemy. With the story spanning the globe from the dark alleys of New York to the scorching sun of Alexandria, Moon Knight searches for answers amidst the graves of Hart Island while being haunted by the last mission of the Karnak Cowboys. On top of all that, fans will get to re-meet Layla El-Faouly, making her official comic book debut.

Following the events of Moon Knight #25, fans can read more with Moon Knight: City of the Dead, written by David Pepose with art by Marcelo Ferreira. In this perception-altering adventure, Moon Knight travels to the underworld known as the City of the Dead to rescue a young runaway’s soul. But as a mercenary and hero, Moon Knight has a lot of blood on his hands, and you know that means he will probably encounter some familiar faces seeking revenge. Also, fans will get to witness Layla El-Faouly’s superhero debut as the all-new Scarlet Scarab!

So strap in friends, and get ready for another epic adventure this July with Moon Knight!

I thought he was an undead zombie man with a messed up face he had to hide in a cowl. I also had no idea what a “soldier of fortune” was. I knew my dad had military friends and I think one of my aunts had a weird boyfriend who was all about being a Soldier of Fortune. Little kid me thought that just meant he wanted to be Scrooge McDuck-level rich with a G.I. Joe outfit. I was 10, and no one taught me anything or talked to me. I had to fill in the blanks with what was on hand.

*Ghost Rider – Ghost Rider was my point of reference for all comics in those early years. He was a flaming skull monster man that drove a demon motorcycle. He was a monster hero and in my mind that made him the coolest thing there ever was. I wish like hell I still had these trading cards, even the small handful of them I owned.
