This Summer Captain Marvel Carol Danvers Will Continue To Soar High!

My first introduction to Marvel’s Captain Marvel* (DC had one as well in those days) was in the pages of a Silver Surfer comic I purchased from a grocery store spinner rack. It had one of those big gnarly anti-theft stickers stuck to the inside cover. At that age, I had no idea what an anti-theft sticker was and thought it was some kinda “peel and win” game that Marvel had going on.
I peeled it once and tore my comic and never did it again. There were a lot of times sitting awake at 3 am sick to my stomach with anxiety and fear that my pre-12-year-old brain imagined peeling those anti-theft stickers off the comics I had tucked in my backpack in the hopes of winning some grand amount of money and moving away from my family and the doctors and the bullies and everything. I never did, because the comics were too important to me and I knew it would take more than money to get away from all of it.
I figured it out years later when I started hanging out in comic shops that those were not in fact prize winning stickers but things that stores put in place to set off the alarms if you tried to steal them. It was even later down the line I realized Captain Marvel’s mantle was passed to another, and that brings us to why we are here today.
Carol Danvers Captain Marvel, is set to embark on an all-new adventure in a brand-new series by Ann Nocenti and artist Paolo Villanelli. The series, titled Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest, will push Carol Danvers to her limits as she takes on a powerful villain team consisting of one of the original Captain Marvel’s greatest foes and a new cosmic mastermind with a devastating plan for the entire universe.
Not only will fans see Captain Marvel doing what she does best, but she will also inspire a new group of younger heroes who will lend their strength to her on this exciting romp across the stars. This new adventure picks up after Carol faces off against the Brood with the X-Men and is processing the loss of someone she holds dear.
All she wants is a sink into a hole and not deal with people, but a cosmic threat comes for Earth’s Mightiest, and they know just who to recruit to really wreck Carol’s world. I for one am really looking forward to this “surprise legacy villain!”
Nocenti, who previously worked as a longtime Marvel editor, expressed her excitement for this project, sharing, “Captain Marvel is a sassy, funny, kick-ass hoot, and so much fun to write.”
She went on to describe the wild story she has in store for fans, set on an alien planet at the edge of a black hole in space, with the space odyssey being tethered by Carol’s friends (and a couple of love interests) in Harpswell, Maine. Nocenti praised her editor, Sarah Brunstad, for being an inspiring collaborator and Villanelli for being a dream artist to work with.
Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest is set to launch in July and will feature a cover by Mike McKone.
