Preview: Mad Cave Studios’ ‘Project Riese’ In All Its Pulp Glory

I love Pulp. There is just something cool about the 1950s-era planes and heroes punching Nazis and robots and weird Nazi alien robots. What I’m saying is that Hellboy, Indiana Jones, The Shadow, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and all those really fun pulp romps make me smile. I’m a much bigger fan when there is representation in those stories and Mad Cave Studios seems to be delivering just that in this new upcoming six-issue Sci-fi Pulp Adventure series Project Riese!
Written by Zac Thompson with art/cover art by Jeff McComsey, with colors by Paul Little and letters by Justin Birch, Project Riese is setting up to be an action-packed adventure/sci-fi tale perfect for fans of Uncharted, Overlord, and The Keep.
The story is set in 1952, and the damage WWII inflicted on the world is still fresh and front of mind. Sam Safdie and his ragtag group of treasure hunters have been searching for the fabled map of the Owl Mountains for years, and as the story picks up they have finally found it! Their journey leads them to a massive war complex that hides both unknown horrors and a fortune in gold. However, the deeper they travel, the more they realize the complex has developed a life of its own and that some secrets are better left buried in the past.
“Project Riese is an adventure story that harkens back to the heyday of weird pulp stories,” said Zac Thompson. “Featuring a cast of characters and sights that feel pulled from the pages of old pulp serials. It’s a weird war story where our POV characters aren’t soldiers or secret agents, but ostensibly normal people caught up in strange circumstances. They’re not looking for glory… but they are looking for a fortune. When Mad Cave approached me for this series, I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to create something with modern themes in this space. If you love the Indiana Jones series, Bioshock, or the most recent Wolfenstien games – you should really dig Project Riese!”
As a fan of the newer Wolfenstein games, this quote just makes me happy.
Project Riese #1 is for sure a pull box read for me and probably any fans who liked Uncharted, Hellboy, and Overlord, and hits comic shops shelves on August, 2nd 2023.
