Advance Review: It’s Hero Vs. Hero In `Torrent’ #4

Overview
Torrent continues its strong run as this story arc builds to its epic conclusion. This issue features the familiar trope of superhero battling superhero, but it’s well done and filled with emotion.

9/10Sure superheroes make their living fighting the likes of Thanos and Kang and Darkseid. But every so often, the real battle royales take place with heroes fighting each other. Think Marvel’s Civil War or Secret Wars.
In its latest strong chapter, Torrent follows that playbook with hero-on-hero violence. It may not be the most original plot, but it is well executed thanks to a strong creative team.
Titular hero Torrent has been on a tear following her husband’s murder and son’s kidnapping at the hands of her arch-nemesis Skelton. She turned her back on good guy ideals and has been killing any villain that stands in the way of her revenge. Now her world’s version of the Justice League, the Praetorians, are trying to stop her.
Showing the preparedness of Batman, Torrent slices her way through the team, despite having fairly tepid powers. It’s her cunning and determination that gives her the focus she needs to continue her revenge journey. It’s nice to see in a female of color.
Marc Guggenheim’s script may not break much new ground, but it’s still entertaining. Torrent has changed considerably – and understandably – from when we first met her. Guggenheim may be laying the groundwork for her eventual return to grace, though it may already be too late.
One nit with the Praetorians’ attack plan: the team largely fights Torrent individually, which is clearly a mistake. Why the most powerful team in the world doesn’t quickly realize its mistake and fight her as a unit is a mystery. (Actually, it’s more of a convenient plot device.)
Artist Justin Greenwood focuses the action on the fight scenes. Don’t expect much in the way of elaborate backgrounds when Torrent brings a gun to a sword fight with Knightwoman. He wants you focused on each punch and power blast. Colorist Rico Renzi largely keeps the numerous fight scenes gritty with a subdued palate.
With only one more issue until the current story arc ends, readers should continue to expect the unexpected.
