Tyler Posey’s ‘Unravel’ Comes Together In The Best Way

Someone told me Tyler Posey had a band, and my honest reaction was “The guy from Teen Wolf?”
For some reason, the assumption was that I, a lover of all things horror and monsters, would instantly start to crack jokes. The reason I know this is because the surprise that washed over said person’s face when I said “I FUC#ING LOVE TEEN WOLF!” was almost laughable.
People often assume that because you really like a type of thing you’re going to immediately be opposed to variations on that thing if it doesn’t fit the box they have put it in. It’s weird that people assume if you like horror like Pumpkinhead and The Conjuring, you are going to somehow have an issue with a coming-of-age monster story because it has pretty people and pop music. I like monsters and good storytelling and welcome it in any form. I would watch goblins run a coffee shop for ten seasons, if the camera work was good and I got a monster-of-the-week story every few episodes.
What I’m telling you with this very thinly veiled message of “don’t assume what other people like based on your limited information about them” is that in order to make sure I was providing the best possible review of Tyler Posey‘s album, Unravel, I had to do some mental gymnastics and separate the fact I was a fan of his work from what I was about to listen to.
So I put aside my love for coming-of-age monster stories and witty dialog delivery, sat back, and hit play.
I was not disappointed.
Tyler Posey’s first full-length album, Unravel, produced by Matt Malpass and John Feldmann is a ton of fun. It has a pop-punk vibe that wanders in and out of genres easily, never losing its edge. I’ve listened to this album three times now… in a row, and I’m not yet tired of it. The album has sixteen new tracks including the previous singles Lemon, Gravity, Don’t Mind Me, and Runnin.
It has a good energy about it that made it a great background sound to write and work too but I could see it work just as well pumping through EarPods at the gym or the background track on a summer road trip. It’s got a bite to it, but it’s an energetic bite. Like a Redbull with a heavy pour of vodka tossed in.
