Advance Review: ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Dog Of War’ #3 Is A Nice Throwback

If the recently wrapped Star Trek: Picard had you hankering for more episodes of The Next Generation, then The Dog of War should put you pack on Deep Space Nine.

The book’s creative team has nailed the feel of an episode of the series, which concluded nearly a quarter of a century ago. The tone of each character feels right – and for the first time, artist Angel Hernandez has consistently illustrated each of them in an accurate and exciting way.

Previously some of Hernandez’ drawings were spot on, though with others, it was hard to tell if you were looking at a Cardassian or a Trill. But he’s upped his game for this middle issue in the limited series. Nearly every panel is carefully crafted and tells the story while showcasing these Starfleet officer and civilians we came to love during the television show’s seven-year run. One particular panel that showcases the crew marching onto the USS Defiant is particularly exciting. And his illustrations of the station itself are spot on.

In the story, written by Mike Chen, the crew deals with the abduction of the dog Latinum. The corgi had been a guest of Quark’s along with some Borg technology that Starfleet was interested in leveraging against the Dominion. Wary of the war, DS9’s crew has become attached to the dog and are willing to fight to get it back. Future issues will let us know whether they are successful, though it goes without saying that the dog never shows up on television.

It’s refreshing when a creative team can accurately capture the spirit of a beloved series like Deep Space Nine. What’s even more rewarding is seeing these creators click and delivering an exciting story that readers will keep coming back for each month.
