Review: It’s A Date Night Of Death In ‘Deadpool’ #7

Deadpool is a character that I often struggle with. He can be obnoxious to the point of grating, self-aware to the point of distraction, and humor is just plain hard to pull off. So just why am I reviewing Deadpool #7? Because there’s just something about a date night story.

Deadpool and his new paramour Valentine (yeah, really) were just enjoying their date night in the planetarium when the Atelier sent two of their most brutal to kill them. Now, the two have to do their best to survive while they gain the upper hand. And will they be able to do it without Wade’s symbiote-dog Princess losing control?

For me to enjoy a Deadpool story, the humor has to be genuine and there needs to be more depth than “madcap violence.” Wong mostly succeeds on both. Their take on Wade is a deeply traumatized smartass, and though I know almost nothing about Valentine, clearly they’ve formed her from the same mold. The banter is fun, and they continually set up some very good jokes (the Sailor Moon one in particular is great). It’s fun and goes some places we don’t see enough in the Marvel Universe.

Zagaria’s work is good throughout. He is able to pace the comedy so it lands just right, and doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the story. His action is easy to follow and always dynamic, and I love his take on Wade’s symbiote-dog. Unfortunately more than a few panels- particularly with the were-fox assassin- are heavily photo referenced to the point of distraction. Milla’s colors are fantastical enough to draw me back in those moments, but it’s glaring where the issues are.

In all though, this is a hell of a lot of fun, and definitely has me curious to see what’s next.
