Strange and history are my favorite types of history. It’s one of the things that has pulled me back to Mignola’s work time and time again. Each offering from The Amazing Screw-On Head to Hellboy to the B.P.R.D. has had some kind of strange and hidden lore that gives you just enough to go on to make the mystery and magic feel real. It’s also the kind of thing that when I wake up at 3am, I sit in the darkness and think about, while the wind blows through the trees, and the shadows move more than they naturally should.
Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea #2 is more of that amazing strange history that makes all these Hellboy and Hellboy-adjacent stories great.
Written by master worldbuilder Mike Mignola, with art and colors by the talented Jesse Lonergan, and letters by Clem Robins, Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea #2 picks up after Miss Truesdale discovers her connection to a gladiator from Ancient Hyperborea.
The framed story transcends time and space, with the majority of this issue still focusing on the life of the the barbarian Miss Truesdale is connected to. There is, however, an amazing inception-like moment where the story goes another level deeper. We learn more about Anum The first Angel and some truly mind blowing revelations about the greater Hellboy Universe that may reshape the mythology of the entire landscape going forward.
I am not one of those people who is going to use the same tired review dialog over and over again and tell you that this is a “Blockbuster” and “World Changing” and how “Things will never be the same again!” because I am not a hack, and you all deserve an honest opinion, not just someone who tries to get their reused thoughts on the back of comic books.
What I’m going to tell you is that if you love the Hellboy universe and the interconnected stories that spring from it, Miss Truesdale And The Fall of Hyperborea is a must-have for your collection. Not only is it a phenomenal weird fiction tale that I’m sure will stand the test of time but it is clearly another thread in the beautiful tapestry that Mike Mignola has created within the Hellboy universe.
